LC Bakery 01 | Washington Pavilion for the Arts and Sciences, SD, USA | 2008

My project LC Bakery is a series of conceptual art installations including sculptures, installation, portrayed documentation, and artistic performance. The name, LC Bakery, full name is Lishan Chang Bakery, also refers to the working studio I used for producing charred bread and artistic creation. The charred bread produced by LC Bakery received a new identity called BLACKERY, anagram of LC Bakery, which is used as basic building blocks (basic mediums) for all works produced by LC Bakery.

Tse | Queens Museum of Art, NY, USA | 2004

Tse is a site-specific installation made with more than 2,000 Blackery in Queens Museum in 2004. BLACKERY, anagram of LC Bakery, which is used as basic building blocks (basic mediums) for all works produced by LC Bakery. These are nailed to the museum wall, with each blackery taking the place of a Chinese calligraphic brushstroke, so that the resulting image at once pays homage to an ancient Chinese art form and "updates" it, bringing it into the 21st century.

Fingerprint | Union Square, NY, USA | 2004

This installation is a direct response to the draconian security measures that were put into effect after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, when U.S. customs began to fingerprint foreign visitors at its ports of entry. The site at Union Square in downtown New York is especially important for this project because it is where native New Yorkers and foreign tourists alike held their all-night candle-lit vigils in the aftermath of the Twin Towers' collapse. It is also where many peace activists staged their protests against the current administration's aggressive new foreign policy, the so-called War on Terror.

Untitled 01 | Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, NY, USA | 2007

Lishan Chang, for preparing open studio event as well as for expressing his gratitude, is creating a site-specific installation to dedicate to LMCC. This installation, as his usual consideration, is also emphasized on the aesthetic interstice that is disregarded or lack of attention in our daily life. Thereupon, he discovers the beauty of building dusts as well as other found objects during installation construction. Things unearthed in the studio tell a story of civilization from the past to present and Lishan Chang, using his own artistic language, is continuing its significance to the future.
